The Black Student Journal is a student-run quarterly publication at the University of Washington in Seattle founded Winter Quarter of 2023. Our mission is to publish and promote the written work of black students on campus.
Message from the 2023-2024 officers:
As we enter the first full academic year of the Black Student Journal, we'd like to express how delighted we are to contribute to the foundation of this organization. Although fairly new a club, the vision for the BSJ is to build an artistic black community here on campus and bridge the creative black spaces in the Seattle area to UW students. Often in academia, students are discouraged in exploring their artistic and creative outlets. As we recognize the necessity of celebrating black art, we hope the BSJ becomes that third place for black students.
best,
The BSJ Board.
Meet the Board
Angelina Miyar (she/her)
Editor-in-Chief
"Helloo! I'm Angelina and I'm a Sophomore studying English and Philosophy. In my free time I enjoy reading, ranting on Letterboxd and discovering new hobbies every five minutes. I'm most excited for the BSJ's future collaborations with event spaces in the Central District."
Lauryn Daniels (she/her)
Poetry Editor
"Hi everyone, my name is Lauryn Daniels and I'm a senior double majoring in social welfare and American ethnic studies with a minor in diversity. From a young age I've been passionate about writing, art, and Black culture, community and people. I am so excited to meet and work with other students and the UW who share those same passions through the BSJ. The BSJ is a long awaited space for Black creatives at the university to fellowship with and uplift one another's works that I am extremely proud and honored to be a part of."
Faith Bamba (she/her)
Poetry Editor
"My name is Faith Bamba, I'm a second year pursuing pre-nursing, and I am an assistant editor for the BSJ. I love traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending time with my friends. I'm so excited to see the submissions this year, connect with artists, and share the amazing work done by black creatives at UW."
Leila M'baye (she/her)
Prose Editor
"My name is Leila M'baye, and I am a second year majoring in Marketing and Information Systems. I enjoy travel, reading, sitting at coffee shops, and watching movies with friends. I am most excited for the book club portion of the BSJ, and connecting with other students over literature and storytelling"
Mawushinu Addo(she/her)
Layout Editor
"Hello, my name is Mawushinu Addo, but I go by Mosea. I'm a senior, graduating with a major in LSJ and a minor in diversity and public policy. In my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family doing activities like watching movies, going on walks, and just doing nothing together. I am super excited to be part of the BSJ board, and hope that I can help the team uplift the voices and creativity of Black young adults."
Sephora Zoro (she/her)
Layout Editor
"Hello, my name is Sephora-Clotilde Zoro and I go by Sephora. I am a fourth year in Electrical Engineering, and this is my first year being involved in the BSJ. Even though I'm not the most artistic person, I deeply value this effort to create an alternative space for young Black people to be creative and expressive, especially at an institution that makes it hard to have that cohesion with other Black students. I hope that this year, I can facilitate the cultivation of this space that I wish existed during my first three years as an undergrad."
Afomeya Hailu (she/her)
Outreach and Coordination Director
"My name is Afomeya Hailu, and I am a junior majoring in Informatics and Political Science. I LOVE reading, macchiatos, discovering new bookstores and coffee shops, and hanging out with friends. I am so proud to be part of the BSJ and am so excited for all the events we have coming up this year. Finding a Black community on campus can be challenging so I am grateful to be part of a group working on creating safe spaces for Black students."
Briana Oppong-Owusu (they/she)
Photographer
“My name is Briana Oppong-Owusu (they/she) and I am a junior studying Interdisciplinary Visual Art. Some of my hobbies include photography (of course), crocheting, drawing and anything else involving art. I’m so grateful to be a part of the BSJ as a Black creative and I’m especially excited for being part of and organizing spaces where other fellow Black creatives can thrive and be fully appreciated.”
